Sound Files

NeoPlanet .wav Files
NeoPlanet uses sounds for various events that occur when using the client. In order for it to play sounds, it accesses .wav files based on their name, and uses the appropriately named file when applicable. Hence, by creating a .wav file, naming it appropriately, and putting it into a specific skin folder, that skin can have sounds that other skins to not.

Here are some basic guidelines for .wav files as they pertain to NeoPlanet:

  • Sound files should not be too long for two reasons:
    • First, the longer a sound file, the larger it is in terms of file size. Obviously, the larger your file sizes are, the longer it will take to download them.
    • Second, NeoPlanet sounds pause the program momentarily until the sound is completed. If that pause is measured in milliseconds, the user will not notice it.
  • We recommend the following format for NeoPlanet .wav files: 11,025 Hz, 8-bit, and Mono. You can, of course, make higher quality sounds, but it will dramatically increase file size.
  • For rollovers, we suggest a 200-500 millisecond period of silence at the beginning of the file to avoid annoying pops and clicks when moving the mouse over graphic elements.

Following is a table of correct .wav filenames, and what their function is in the NeoPlanet environment. You need not use ALL sound files listed. Using a lot of sound files can increase the size of your skin/browser exponentially, and large files take longer to download. Pick and choose carefully.
